Don't Start Another Internet Marketing Website! |
|
by Michael Ellis (5/26/2006) Many new online entrepreneurs seem to break into the Internet Marketing business by building an Internet Marketing website. I'm sure they notice all the wonderful advertisements that they get bombarded with from these types of sites and think there must be a whole lot of money to be made owning an Internet Marketing website. Let me inject a little reality into that thinking and say that you're very likely to fail in your pursuit of making any money if you open another Internet Marketing website. The market is just too saturated with them! In fact, if you do launch an Internet Marketing website and do make some decent money with it, then you're losing a ton of money, because you could probably make a killing focusing your time on a market less saturated.
Don't get me wrong, if you like Internet Marketing and want to start a website to collaborate with others on the subject, then by all means do so, obviously I have. Just don't get your hopes very high about making a living off the site. There's just too much competition from other more established sites. Unless you have a unique aspect of your site (i.e. you're an Internet Marketing celebrity, you have an extremely unique feature, etc.) start within a less saturated niche. The key to starting a money making Internet business is to find a niche that isn't oversaturated with everybody and their Uncle trying to make money from it. How can you tell if a niche is oversaturated? One way to find out is to do a simple Google search on the topic. For example, if you go to Google and conduct a search for 'Internet Marketing' you'll find that there are over 500 million websites that are returned! Where do you think your Internet Marketing website will end up in the search results? I can tell you that you'd be lucky if you broke the top 30,000 sites listed! And people that do use the search engine to find Internet Marketing websites rarely look beyond page 3 of the search results – that's all the way from site #1 to site #30 in the search results. Just for kicks I checked the Google Pagerank (PR) for the 1st and 50th site returned from the 'Internet Marketing' search and found the PRs to be 8 and 7, respectively. A new website starts out with a PR of 0 and has to get a decent amount of traffic and back-links before it can get a PR of 5. I know of numerous established Internet Marketing websites that have been up and running for years that only have a PR of 3 or 4. Granted a high PR doesn't necessarily guarantee you a high placing in the search results, but it's a decent indicator. In conclusion, if you're depending on search engine traffic, then launching another Internet Marketing website isn't a good idea. You can be much more successful by building your site around a much less popular niche.
