Your web site's traffic levels and Google rank (Page Rank & positioning in search results) are vitally important factors that determine the success of your web site. New web site owners are constantly seeking the magic ingredient to instantly generate tons of web site traffic and boost their Google Page Rank. Unfortunately, outside of paid advertising (massive Adwords campaigns, etc), these magic ingredients that generate instant success just don't exist. Let's look at just 2 tried and true methods that all web site owners should be implementing to help gain traffic and Google ranking.

In just about every case, getting good web site traffic and ranking is a gradual process that is going to take time and effort from the web site owner. Once the web site is up and running, two of the more time consuming tasks include the following:

Posting good content regularly:

Good content is content that your target web site visitor wants to read and finds useful, AND content that is unique and created specifically around a few keywords.

You need to keep your visitor wanting more with new content posted to your site frequently. It's good practice to shoot to deploy a new content page to your web site at least once every couple of days, or ideally, once per day. Your website will quickly grow in size and your visitors will become accustom to checking out your site for new information.

You also want your new content to be indexed in the search engines so your new web page can be found via a web search. Visitors that find your web site from a search engine do so by searching on a particular keyword, or a set of keywords. So before you create the content, you should be aware of what these keywords are. You can use the Overture search tool to help find which keywords are used most often in searches.

Once you find the proper keywords and are ready to make some content around those keywords, make sure to include those keywords in the new content's URL (directory path), title, description, in bold, italics, as well as a sprinkled throughout the text.

It's always best to develop the content yourself, or pay someone to develop the original content for you. That way you can be sure the content is unique. Content that is not unique is penalized by the Google duplicate content filter.

Generating quality inbound links:

Inbound links are links to your web site from another web site. Quality inbound links are links from another website with a decent Google Page Rank (from the page your link is posted on) and contain keywords in the anchor text (text in the link). Each day or so you should be seeking out 1 or 2 sites that are similar to yours and requesting the site to host an inbound link to your website.

The task to finding (and actually getting) quality inbound links to your site can be as simple as typing a few keywords into Google and sending an email to the webmasters of some of the higher ranking websites that are returned. You could also request a link exchange in various marketing forums. You can request a link exchange in our VictoryKey forums here.

But before you make an inbound link request to a particular webmaster, check out the site's 'Links' page and verify that the page is indexed in Google and has a decent Page Rank. If it is indexed and has a decent Page Rank, then go ahead and make the request. However, be sure to specify the anchor text that you want in your inbound link.

Certainly the above two tasks aren't the only ones that help generate traffic and increase your web site's ranking, but they are certainly a couple of heavy hitters. If your successful at doing the above tasks regularly, and your web site doesn't have any issues (design-wise, domain-wise, banned-wise, etc), then you WILL notice a gradual and steady increase in your site's traffic and ranking. And after a year or so, your site should be generating some darn good stats.
