Most forms of website promotion cost money. While the money may be well worth it in the end, it still requires an initial out-of-pocket investment. Some beginners simply can't afford to cover the costs of these types of advertising methods and look for other low cost ways to get their website noticed. One good way to promote a website for virtually no cost and help build your search engine rankings at the same time is to write small informative articles on your website's topic and submit those articles to various article directories.

Article directories accept articles on various topics to add to their directory. Many website and Ezine owners looking for content on a specific topic search these directories for content to post on their website or Ezine. Since each article that you create will have a backlink to your website in your signature paragraph at the end of the article, you accomplish two marketing goals. One goal, in the case where your content is posted to a website, you will get a backlink to your website. This backlink will help with your search engine ranking, and the more banklinks, the better. For the second goal, you will get direct traffic from the webite or Ezine owners' website via your website link in your signature paragraph in your article.

When creating articles for website promotion, there are a few tips that you should keep in mind.

1) Keep the article short with small paragraphs - Most Internet readers do not like to read huge articles, and they certainly get turn off with huge blocks of text in each paragraph. Aim for articles that contain between 450-800 words, and paragraphs that are 3-7 lines long.

2) Use key words that pertain to the topic of your website - this will help drive quality search engine traffic to your articles, and hopefully, on to your website.

3) Use interesting and relevant information: For example, if your website sells fishing lures, then you better offer some interesting advice for people looking to buy fishing lures.

4) Have an Introduction, body, and conclusion. The better article websites - the ones that website and Ezine owners frequent for content - want good articles. So, simply throwing together a bunch of words without any structure or proper proofreading will hurt your chances of the article getting posted.

5) Create a compelling signature paragraph. At the end of each article, you should have a 3-5 line paragraph that describes you and/or your website, as well as, a free offer of some sort that will entice the reader to visit your website. The free offer could simply be an eBook or an eNewsletter - anything to entice them to click on your website.

There you have it... Five tips to follow when submitting articles to directories for website promotion.

Be aware, though, if the website you are promoting is a content website, and your website's content is the content you're sending away to the article directories, then you may be hurting your website's search engine ranking for the keywords in your articles. In other words, when someone types in your article's keywords in a search engine, they may be directed to the article directory rather than your website. The article directory will still have a link to your website, but it then becomes a two-step process.

FYI - I know a website owner that makes it her goal to write and submit one article per day to numerous article directories, and that's her only form of website advertisement. After 1 year, most of her websites get more traffic than people spending hundreds of dollars per month!
